10 Fun Minmi Facts for Kids

1. Minmi Was a Dinosaur

Minmi was an armored dinosaur from the ankylosaur side of the dinosaur family tree.

Kid Decode: Small dinosaur, armor jacket, Australian address.

2. It Lived in Queensland

Minmi paravertebra was discovered near Minmi Crossing in Queensland, Australia.

Kid Decode: That fossil came with a place-name souvenir.

3. It Was a Southern Hemisphere First

The Australian Museum describes Minmi as the first ankylosaur known from the Southern Hemisphere.

Kid Decode: Armored dinosaurs did not only stomp around northern continents.

4. It Had Bony Armor

Minmi had bony plates in its skin, giving it extra protection from predators.

Kid Decode: Not a tank, but definitely wearing dinosaur body armor.

5. Its Backbone Had Rods

Minmi paravertebra was named for thin bony rods called paravertebrae along the spine.

Kid Decode: Its back came with extra fossil scaffolding.

6. It May Have Been Fairly Quick

Australian Museum notes suggest the rods and relatively long legs may have helped Minmi move faster than many armored dinosaurs.

Kid Decode: Armor plus speed is a surprisingly neat combo.

7. It Was Not the Same as Kunbarrasaurus

A more complete skeleton once called Minmi sp. was later named Kunbarrasaurus, so scientists keep Minmi paravertebra separate.

Kid Decode: The Minmi file got a proper fossil folder cleanup.

8. It Ate Plants

Minmi was a herbivore that likely cropped low-growing plants in Early Cretaceous Australia.

Kid Decode: Leaf lunch, armor lunchbox.

9. Baby Minmi Were Hatchlings

Minmi dinosaurs hatched from eggs, so babies can be called hatchlings.

Kid Decode: A hatchling Minmi was a tiny future armored nugget.

10. It Shows Australia Had Ankylosaurs

Minmi helps show that ankylosaurs lived in Australia during the Cretaceous.

Kid Decode: Australia’s dinosaur cast had spikes, plates, and small armored runners.
