Kid Decode: Raptor family, pocket-sized trouble.

3. Its Name Means Bambi Thief

The name Bambiraptor combines Bambi, referring to the young-looking fossil, with raptor meaning seizer or thief.

Kid Decode: Soft name, sharp claws. Fossils enjoy contrast.

4. It Was Found by a Teenager

AMNH explains that a 14-year-old boy found the bones on his family’s ranch in Montana.

Kid Decode: That is one fossil-hunting day with spectacular homework energy.

5. It Was Very Small

Bambiraptor was much smaller than movie raptors, with the main skeleton coming from a juvenile animal.

Kid Decode: This raptor was less monster and more feathered pocket rocket.

6. It Had a Sickle Claw

Like other dromaeosaurids, Bambiraptor had a raised sickle-shaped claw on each second toe.

Kid Decode: That toe claw was the tiny dinosaur’s folding pocket knife.

Close relatives of Bambiraptor had feathers, so scientists usually reconstruct it with feathering.

Kid Decode: Not scaly lizard gremlin, more feathered snack-hunter.

8. It Had Bird-Like Features

The skeleton is often described as bird-like, with traits that helped scientists compare dromaeosaurids and early birds.

Kid Decode: Bambiraptor is basically a little fossil note saying birds and dinosaurs are deeply connected.

9. It Lived in Montana

The holotype came from the Upper Two Medicine Formation of Montana.

Kid Decode: Ancient Montana had floodplains, nesting grounds, and tiny raptors in the underbrush.

10. Baby Bambiraptors Were Hatchlings

Bambiraptor dinosaurs hatched from eggs, so babies can be called hatchlings.
