The Courage to Pause
This is a short story about courage in school and how slowing down can be an act of bravery.
School mornings were usually calm, but today felt different.
Isabella noticed Mia looking upset and stayed close, Aria imagined colorful ideas for art class, and Logan listened quietly picking up feelings others didn’t say aloud.
During group work, Mia and another student both reached for the paintbrush box, and Mia snapped in frustration, surprising the whole class.
Aria whispered a sharing idea, but Mia crossed her arms, too upset to listen.
Logan noticed her embarrassment, and Isabella gently encouraged her to take a breath.
Mia admitted she was trying to stop getting angry so quickly but found it hard.
Logan reminded her that courage isn’t perfection — it’s trying again.
Aria suggested drawing one picture together using the brushes, and Mia took slow breaths before apologizing for snapping.
The class relaxed as Logan handed her a clean brush and Aria placed paper between them. By afternoon, Mia’s half of the artwork blended beautifully with her partner’s, and she felt proud — and a little braver.
