Chirpy Stories
The Shadow in the Spots
This is a gentle short story about courage during trouble and how bravery can appear even when someone feels scared.
Polka-Dot Forest was full of trees covered in bright spots—red, blue, yellow, and purple. Momo the Monkey swung from branch to branch, laughing and trying new tricks. Pia the Peacock strutted along the path, her spotted feathers almost matching the trees. Sabi the Snake moved quietly through the grass, shy but always noticing little things others missed.
One afternoon, they were playing near the biggest polka-dot tree when the sky suddenly grew dark. A strong wind rushed in. Branches creaked. Leaves swirled in circles.
Then they heard it. A loud growl from behind a cluster of spotted bushes.
Pia froze. “What was that?”
Momo grabbed a branch. “Maybe we should climb and hide!”
Sabi’s tail trembled. “I… I’m scared too.”
For a moment, everyone wanted to run.
But then Sabi noticed something. The “growl” came again—only this time, it sounded a bit like… a stomach rumbling?
Sabi took a shaky breath. “I think… I should check. If someone’s in trouble, we can’t just leave them.”
“You’re the shy one,” Pia said softly. “Are you sure?”
“No,” Sabi whispered, “I’m not sure… But courage is doing the right thing even when you’re scared, right?”
Momo nodded. “We’ll come with you. You don’t have to be brave alone.”
Together, they slowly peeked behind the bushes.
There, shivering in the wind, was a small spotted deer. Its tummy rumbled loudly, and its leg was stuck in a tangle of vines.
“That was you?” Momo laughed gently, feeling less afraid.
Pia lowered her feathers. “You must’ve been so scared in the dark.”
Sabi slid forward, heart still pounding, and carefully loosened the vines. “It’s okay now. We heard you… and we came.”
The deer stood up, wobbling but safe. “Thank you for helping me,” it said. “I thought no one would come.”
Sabi smiled a tiny smile. “I was scared… but helping you mattered more.”
