The Midnight Loft Welcome
This short story shows how kindness, welcome, and gentle listening help new friendships grow.
Midnight Reading Loft was the coziest corner of the whole library. Fairy lights twinkled above beanbags, and tall windows showed a sky full of stars. Oliver liked helping everyone work together when they got stuck. Miles moved quietly between shelves, offering help without being asked. Zoey spotted tiny night-time surprises, and Noah turned pages slowly, thinking things through with care.
One evening, a new kid stepped into the loft, holding a book tightly and staying near the door.
Miles noticed her first. “There’s space by the window,” he said gently. “Want to sit with us?”
She hesitated. “I don’t know anyone here.” Oliver smiled warmly. “You know us now. I’m Oliver. We’re working on a story puzzle—want to join?” Zoey bounced over. “We’re writing an ending where a butterfly finds its home. I bet you have good ideas.”
The new kid’s eyes softened. “I like butterflies… maybe the wind helps it?” Noah nodded. “That’s a wonderful idea. Let’s build from that.” They pulled a beanbag into the circle, bringing her into their quiet creativity.
Miles offered her a soft blanket. Oliver set aside a space on the story paper. Zoey pointed out a tiny moth fluttering by the window, making her smile. Noah wrote her butterfly idea neatly so everyone could see it.
The loft began to feel warm and friendly. They built the story together—line by line—letting her ideas shine. When the final sentence was written, something else had begun too.
As the fairy lights dimmed, the new kid whispered, “I’m glad I came. I feel like I made real friends tonight.” Oliver smiled. “You did.”
