The Broken Branch Choice

Treasure Oak Woods was full of secrets. Tiny golden acorns hid between roots, and rays of light made the leaves shine like coins. Yani the Yak walked slowly along the path, strong and gentle. Rafaela the Raccoon padded beside him, always spotting tiny lost things. Bumi the Baboon swung from branch to branch, making everyone laugh with silly tricks.
One afternoon, Bumi had a big idea. “I’ll put on a forest show!” he shouted. “I’ll decorate the biggest oak with hanging branches and vines. It’ll look amazing!”
Before anyone could answer, he started yanking vines and snapping small branches to make space.
Crack. A thin branch broke and fell. A small bird’s half-built nest tumbled with it.
Rafaela gasped. “Bumi, stop! The birds were using that!”
Bumi froze. “I… I was just trying to make it pretty. I didn’t mean to hurt anything.”
Yani felt his heart pound. He didn’t like arguing. But he also didn’t like seeing the forest hurt.
He took a deep breath. “Bumi,” he said gently but firmly, “this isn’t okay. The woods are our home too. We have to protect them, not just use them for fun.”
Bumi’s smile faded. “Are you mad at me?”
Yani answered honestly, “I’m upset about what happened, but I still care about you. Doing the right thing means fixing this, even if it feels uncomfortable.”
Rafaela found the nest and carefully lifted it. Together, they chose a safe branch and helped the bird rebuild: Rafaela fetched soft moss, Bumi gathered twigs instead of snapping them, and Yani held the branch steady with his strong horns.
When they finished, the bird chirped happily.
Bumi sighed. “Next time, I’ll ask the forest for permission—with my eyes and my heart—before I change anything.”
Yani smiled. “That’s brave.”
