The Berry Bush Share
This is a gentle short story about generosity and how sharing makes moments sweeter for everyone.
The woods were cool and shady, with sun spots dancing on the ground. Mika the Meerkat stood on a rock, watching for danger with sharp, caring eyes. Sabi the Snake slid quietly between roots, noticing tiny clues on the forest floor. Rafaela the Raccoon searched for shiny pebbles and lost buttons. And Milo the Mongoose rushed from bush to bush, always moving fast.
One morning, Milo found the best thing ever:
a huge bush covered in big, sweet berries.
“Yes!” he shouted. “All for me! I saw it first!”
He picked berries as fast as he could, stuffing them into his cheeks and making a little pile behind a log.
Sabi watched the ground. “There are lots of pawprints here,” he whispered. “Others must use this bush too.”
Rafaela tilted her head. “Milo, maybe slow down. Leave some for everyone?”
Milo snapped, “No! I got here first. If they wanted berries, they should have come earlier.”
Mika climbed up beside him. “Your voice sounds angry,” he said calmly. “Is that how you really want to be?”
Milo stopped. His chest felt tight. He didn’t want to be the angry one. He just didn’t want to lose something good.
Just then, a small squirrel and a rabbit appeared, looking hungry and worried.
“Did the berries all fall off?” the rabbit asked quietly.
Milo looked at his big pile. Then he took a deep breath.
“I was being greedy,” he admitted. “I took too many. I’m sorry. These are for all of us.”
He pushed the berry pile into the middle.
Rafaela smiled and helped divide the berries fairly.
Sabi guided them to another small bush he’d noticed.
Mika kept watch so everyone felt safe.
The berries tasted sweeter when they ate together.
