Chirpy Stories
Gentle Tag in the Forest
This is a short story about respecting personal space and how friends can listen and create games where everyone feels comfortable.
In the Forest Whisper Train, Lulu the Lion’s favorite game was tag. ‘You’re it!’ she’d roar, her bouncy leaps shaking leaves from the trees. But her play sometimes felt more like a friendly earthquake than a game.
Zazu the Chameleon watched from a branch, turning leaf-green as he observed. Nearby, Yani the Yak chewed grass with calm, steady breaths.
During one sunny afternoon game, Lulu kept bumping into Tara the Turtle. ‘Come on, Tara, run faster!’ Lulu laughed, nudging her shell with a playful paw. Tara’s whole world felt wobbly and crowded.
Tara tried to tuck quietly into her shell, hoping Lulu would chase someone else. But Lulu kept bouncing nearby. ‘I just want to play!’ Lulu called, her energy buzzing like a happy bee.
From his leafy hideout, Zazu noticed Tara’s worried face. He turned the exact color of the fern beside him, watching with curious, swiveling eyes.
Gentle Yani stepped between them, her warm voice rumbling like distant thunder. ‘Let’s all take a breath together,’ she said, standing as steady as an old tree.
Tara took a deep breath and peeked from her shell. ‘Lulu,’ she said softly, ‘I need space to feel safe when we play. My shell needs room to be cozy.’
Lulu paused, her tail drooping like a wilted flower. ‘Oh! I’m sorry I made you feel squished,’ she said. ‘Let’s invent a game where we both have room to be ourselves.’
Together they created ‘Gentle Tag’ where everyone moves slowly and asks, ‘May I tag you?’ before playing. Tara smiled inside her shell as Lulu carefully tiptoed around her. The Forest Whisper Train echoed with happy, respectful play from that day forward.
