The school playground buzzed with excitement for the Friendly Trails Race, a small competition meant to teach fairness and teamwork. Hannah stood near the starting line, humming a soft tune to calm the nervous runners. Henry bounced with questions, Carson grinned at the idea of shortcuts, and Stella checked her shoelaces, remembering their teacher’s instructions to follow the marked flags.
Henry whispered that the teacher wouldn’t see them behind the tree, but Hannah reminded him gently, “Teachers give rules to help us, not to stop the fun.”
When the race began, Carson and Henry darted toward the shortcut behind the oak tree while Stella stayed on the marked path. But the shortcut wasn’t safe—Carson slipped in mud, and Henry toppled into a pile of leaves.
Stella reached them first and took their hands. “The marked path is safer,” she said. “Let’s finish together.”
They returned to the trail, muddy but grateful. Their teacher brushed dirt from their sleeves and explained kindly that rules are meant to keep everyone safe.
Carson sighed, admitting they thought they knew better. Henry promised to follow the flags next time.
Hannah hummed again, proud of how they learned from the moment.
They crossed the finish line last—but together and wiser.
